Halo Headlines: Angels getting better without getting better, still searching for a starting pitcher

The December 23rd, 2013 edition of daily news for the Los Angeles Angels including Angels getting better without getting better, still searching for a starting pitcher and much more…

The Story: The Angels are getting better without getting better.

The Monkey Says: This is a more statistical look at something that a lot of fans have been saying anyway. The Angels should get better simply by self-improvement and revamping the pitching staff with different, if not necessarily better personnel. The Angels made a lot of gambles the last few seasons and they have almost all come up snake eyes. One would think that sooner or later they'd catch a hot streak and hit some of those bets and be able to pull themselves out of this cycle of not-quite-good-enoughness. That doesn't mean it will be this year, just that it could happen at some point while Mike Trout still wears an Angel uniform.

The Story: One more starting pitcher is the one thing left on the Angels' winter shopping list.

The Monkey Says: This we already knew, but one would hope that a right-handed platoon mate for Ibanez would be on there too.

The Story: The Angels attended a workout for Mark Mulder.

The Monkey Says: Mulder is attempting a comeback after a long layoff, so the Halos were probably just doing some due diligence. The most that would come of this for Mulder, with any club, is a minor league contract with an invite to spring training.

The Story: Re-doing the fateful 2012 offseason for the Angels.

The Monkey Says: Signed Josh Hamilton instead of Zack Greinke is going to be on Dipoto's GM gravestone.
