The September 3rd, 2014 edition of daily news for the Los Angeles Angels including Angels add 11 to roster, Angels tied for best World Series odds and much more…
The Story: The Angels added 11 players to the active roster as part of September call-ups.
The Monkey Says: Brennan Boesch is back and already getting a crack at filling the left-handed DH void. John Buck will serve as the third catcher. Tony Campana as the go-to pinch-runner. Efren Navarro is back after a brief hiatus as well. Luis Jimenez and Shawn O’Malley will serve as depth, but neither figures to actually play much. C.J. Cron returns and he figures to be the most interesting guy to watch as he could play a lot against left-handed pitching or not at all since Gordon Beckham has really usurped that playing time. In the bullpen, Cory Rasmus returns. Vinnie Pestano and Cam Bedrosian will add to the middle relief mix. Wade LeBlanc will serve as rotation insurance and maybe even get a shot at starting one more time. This should just about do it for call-ups, but they might add Drew Rucinski after Arkansas’ playoff run is over.
The Story: Michael Kohn and J.B. Shuck were designated for assignment.
The Monkey Says: The Angels had no need for Shuck, but I’m still surprised they just cut him loose. Kohn is less surprising as he really struggled after his demotion to Triple-A. Both were DFA’d to clear 40-man roster space for John Buck and Wade LeBlanc.
The Story: The Angels are tied with the Dodgers for the best World Series odds.
The Monkey Says: According to bookmakers who care not about who wins, but who they can win money off of. Baseball Prospectus actually has the Angels with the best odds, though Fangraphs has them with the fourth best odds.
The Story: Is Mike Trout striking out too much to be MVP?
The Monkey Says: Read this column if you want an answer to a question that nobody ever asked ever in the history of ever.
The Story: Matt Shoemaker was the best pitcher in August.
The Monkey Says: And yet still nobody outside of Anaheim knows who he is.
The Story: Some bonus Angels prospects to keep an eye on.
The Monkey Says: More than anything this tells us that the Halos actually are making headway in rebuilding their Latin American pipeline of talent.
