The October 12th, 2011 edition of daily news for the LA Angels including DiPoto and Oppenheimer rumored to be GM candidates, Wells’ contract is still the worst, Olney thinks Angels might go after Pujols and much more…

The Story: Jon Heyman tweets that Jerry DiPoto and Damon Oppenheimer are candidates for the Angels general manager opening.

The Monkey Says: DiPoto is going to be a hot name for any GM opening so it is a bit early to say if he is a serious candidate or if the Angels are just looking at him because it is the trendy thing to do.

The Story:Joe Posnanski declares Vernon Wells’ contract the worst in baseball.

The Monkey Says: At least there are only three years left on it, right?  Anyone?

The Story: Buster Olney speculates that the Angels could make a run at Albert Pujols.

The Monkey Says: The comments are in Bill Simmons’ podcast, so you’ll actually have to listen to hear it, but Buster speculates that Arte Moreno might want to make a statement and show how the organization has changed by bringing in Pujols.  It is completely without basis though and, much like last off-season, ignores the Angels’ budgetary constraints.

The Story: Some fans think it is time for Mike Scioscia to get fired too.

The Monkey Says: Look, Scioscia isn’t perfect, but he also isn’t even close to being a liability.  While the Angels haven’t been able to get back to the World Series under his tenure, the team has remained competitive for a decade, which never happened before in Angels history.  Considering how deeply flawed some of the rosters he had to work with have been (and, yes, some of that is on him), he has actually done a fantastic job managing and shouldn’t be hearing this kind of BS.
