The February 1st, 2012 edition of daily news for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim including yet another Trumbo trade idea, Angel minor leaguer suspended for drug abuse, Baseball America’s top Angel prospects and much more…
The Story: A trade idea of sending Mark Trumbo to the Rays for Wade Davis.
The Monkey Says: Sending Trumbo to Tampa for Davis isn’t a terrible idea, but I’m not sure it is a good one either. Davis has been a disappointment with the Rays thus far and is far from a guaranteed upgrade in the rotation over Jerome Williams or Garrett Richards. However, my biggest problem is trading Trumbo at this very moment. If, and I do mean if, Kendrys Morales comes back close to his pre-injury form, then the team can look into moving Trumbo.
The Story: Angel farmhand Daniel Reynolds has been suspended for 50 games for a drug of abuse.
The Monkey Says: Hopefully the kid can get the help he needs and get his life back on track, after that he can worry about his career.
The Story: Baseball America gives their list of top Angel prospects as well as what could go wrong with them.
The Monkey Says: BA is a pay site, so that is why I am linking to the OCR, so that you can at least get a taste. But the BA list is worth reviewing as too many sites spend too much time writing shiny happy things about prospects while glossing over their flaws, especially when it comes to major prospects like Trout.
The Story: Mark Saxon previews the Angels’ catcher situation.
The Monkey Says: When he started talking about catcher ERA, I started to get worried that Saxon had been possessed by Lyle Spencer. As far as the content goes, I find it curious that there was no mention of Bobby Wilson and an assumption that Hank Conger would make the team and play somewhat regularly. I have generally presumed that Conger would return to Triple-A for at least the first few months of the season so he can work on his defense everyday in Salt Lake.
The Story: Hank Conger does his best Tim Salmon impersonation.
The Monkey Says: With all the viral videos and photos Hank has churned out, I’m beginning to wonder if baseball is really his true calling.
The Story: Where are all the 2002 Angels now?
The Monkey Says: Ben Weber is an umpire now? I bet he has the most honked up looking strike hand signal.
