So the big news of the day going into this game is that Albert Pujols is getting the day off. This move is interesting because if the offense somehow miraculously takes off tonight, that will put even more pressure on Albert to get going. Personally, I think this has been about two weeks overdue. We can all see that Albert is pressing. You can actually see the sawdust coming off his grinding of the bat. More importantly, this will force the rest of the Angel batters to look in the mirror and do some reflection on their roles in this travesty. The notion that it is all Albert’s fault is ridiculous given that really only Torii Hunter has been anything resembling consistent this season. The whole team has to pick it up and soon.
On the other side of the coin is CJ Wilson, who has been worth every penny of his enormous contract. It’s odd that going into the year, it was Wilson everyone thought was the risk while Pujols was the sure thing. But Wilson has been as good as advertised and will probably have to be brilliant tonight to have any shot at a win. This is due both to the offensive woes and the bullpen’s explosive nature. It’s an unenviable position to be in. But that is what has become of the Angel’s season.
