5. If lefty Brett Cecil shut down the Halos last night, just imagine what southpaw Ricky Romero will do the Angel line-up tonight. Romero has been one of the best pitchers in the league thus far this season, so the Angels are going to have to really step up their game if they don’t want to get shutout two nights in a row.
4. The fact that Kevin Fransden is now apparently the de facto starting third baseman for the Angels is a microcosm of the LAA season. Fransden, who wasn’t even good enough to make the Red Sox out of training camp, has pretty much fully replaced once-prized prospect Brandon Wood. That kind of thing just shouldn’t happen to contenders and, right now, the Angels don’t look much like contenders.
3. Is it so much to ask that the Angels go one game without a reliever imploding? I could stomach it if it was just the same guy or two, but it is like the bullpen draws straws before each game to see who is going to get lit up that night. I keep waiting for the pen to turn things around like they did last season, but with so many different guys failing from night to night, I just don’t see how that is going to happen.
2. Mike Scioscia had the right idea in dropping Hideki Matsui in the order last night, he just didn’t take it far enough. With another tough lefty on the mound, Matsui should be on the bench. It really doesn’t even matter that the Angels don’t have a viable replacement for Matsui, they just can’t allow themselves to suffer through another night of him weakly flailing against southpaw offerings. It isn’t going to help the line-up and it isn’t going to help Matsui break out of his slump.
1. Joe Saunders couldn’t repeat his early season success against the Jays last night, but maybe Ervin Santana can? Ervin spun a one-run complete game in Toronto way back in April and an encore performance would be greatly appreciated tonight because the Angels need both a win and a one night reprieve from more bullpen shenanigans.
