John Mozeliak has eleven arbitration decisions and five free agent calls to make for a franchise he won’t be working for past December. That’s the entire Angels offseason in one sentence: an interim general manager running out his own contract while deciding the fates of Reid Detmers, Zach Neto and nine other players before someone else inherits whatever he leaves behind.
Sorting through the Angels’ roster decisions is already a lot for any front office in a clean year. This year it means getting through eleven arbitration-eligible players before the November 20 non-tender deadline (Nolan Schanuel, Josh Lowe, Jose Siri, Grayson Rodriguez, Ben Joyce, Oswald Peraza, Sam Bachman, Tayler Saucedo and Tyler Heineman among them), and then still answering for five free agents on top of it. Robert Stephenson’s 2027 option already got declined, with a $1 million buyout attached. Travis d’Arnaud, Adam Frazier and Yoán Moncada are straightforward walk-or-sign calls. Anthony Rendon, somehow, is still part of the conversation, owed real money for a uniform he hasn’t worn since 2024.
The two decisions that actually matter are Detmers and Neto, and the fanbase already knows it. Neto backed up his breakout year with a better one: 157 games, a .766 OPS, 27 home runs and 5.2 bWAR, his third straight season north of 5.0 WAR.
This is how I’d view the Angels roster heading into the offseason, using @DealinTheCards’s great new website.

There isn’t a version of this winter where the Angels just let that sit.
That urgency runs headfirst into an org chart with nobody permanent at the top. Mozeliak’s exit was decided before this stretch even started, and the search behind him has barely made a sound. Front-office hiring at the Angels has gone quiet since free agency opened, and manager Kurt Suzuki, let go when his contract wasn’t renewed, already knows he won’t be the one making calls either. It’s the same hole that opened up after the Angels’ earlier front-office upheaval, just with real deadlines attached to it now. Stan Kroenke’s incoming ownership group isn’t due until early 2027, well after the non-tender deadline, so whoever ends up owning these calls long-term isn’t the person making them right now.
The Angels remain without a permanent GM as they prepare for an ownership change and a front-office overhaul.
• Interim GM John Mozeliak will leave after December
• New ownership is expected to take over in early 2027
• The next GM will lead the search to replace manager Kurt…— Called 3rd Strike (@Called3St) October 31, 2026
Mozeliak is still the only signature on anything the Angels do for the next six weeks, and he’s already told everyone he’s out the door in December.
Think about the incentives for a second. Mozeliak doesn’t answer to Kroenke’s group and won’t be around to defend whatever he signs off on. He has no reason to get cute. A rational lame duck bats these down the middle: keep the obvious keepers, non-tender the marginal names, and stall on Detmers and Neto until an actual decision-maker exists. No conspiracy necessary: ELEVEN roster calls, decided by someone with ZERO stake in how they age.
Detmers is the cleanest example of what’s at stake. He’s a legitimate left-handed starter on a team that just lost 100 games, which makes him exactly the kind of player a real front office builds a return around, extension or trade package, take your pick. Instead he’s sitting arbitration-eligible and un-extended, waiting on an answer from a GM whose last real act in Anaheim might be punting the question to whoever replaces him. Six weeks, eleven answers, one guy running the whole thing who’s already looking for his own way out.
