5. Interleague didn’t treat the Angels as well as one would have hoped, but maybe Toronto can help them out? The Jays may be six games over .500, but they also have already been swept once by the Halos this season and that was in Toronto. Hopefully the Angels can keep their mojo going and get back on track against the Blue Jays again after the disappointing end to the recent road trip.
4. Almost two months into a new season and all I can think about when the Angels play the Blue Jays is that they didn’t get a Roy Halladay deal done. Good thing he isn’t currently destroying the National League right now… dammit.
3. Seeing Jose Bautista this series should give the Angels both hope and perspective on Brandon Wood. The more I think about Wood, the more I see him having a career very similar to Bautista. Both are guys that were thought to have big potential, but neither can make enough contact. For Bautista, he has continued to gut it out and is now having a big power season. He isn’t going to be an MVP or anything, but he has learned to accept his deficiencies and maximize his strengths. If Wood could just figure that out for himself, he would finally stop pressing so much and begin producing, even if it means finally admitting that he will never achieve the massive potential we all once thought he had.
2. It is official, Mike Scioscia can’t trust anyone in the bullpen anymore. Hell, he can’t even trust himself to use the bullpen correctly anymore. With Rodney and Jepsen both having slip ups lately, there just isn’t anywhere for Sosh to hide when he has to take the starter out of the game. I don’t think that is going to force him to change bullpen roles for this game or anything, but rather points out just how hopeless the whole relief situation has become.
1. Can Joe Saunders stay hot? He is riding a hot streak right now, having allowed just two earned runs in his last three starts, covering 22.1 innings. I like Joe’s odds to keep his dominant streak going since he already spun eight shutout innings against the Jays earlier this year.
